The book tells the story of some of the immigrants from Italy to Island Bay, Wellington, who came before and after the Second World War, and found few of the foods that they left behind. It tells the story of one family, the Cuccurullo family, and their friends and reproduces many of the dishes that they have continued to enjoy a long way from home. They struggled to access the essential ingredients of home – something that has changed thanks to a broader Kiwi palate and the availability of ingredients from Mediterranean Food Warehouse, established by the first generation of New Zealand born Cuccurullos.
