A study about the Italian community of immigrant workers of the Moawhango, Tongariro Tunnel, part of The Tongariro Power scheme. With the termination of their contracts on in 1982-83, Italian workers in Tūrangi were faced with the problem of deciding whether to return to Italy, stay in New Zealand or go elsewhere. All workers had permanent residence status and were entitled to stay. This study is concerned with the problems surrounding decision making at the time, and includes insights about the company Codelfa-Cogefar, background of the workers and working conditions, social exchanges (including the reaction of the locals to the Italians), family commitments, and the choices that were made about either returning to Italy, going somewhere else, or committing to New Zealand.
